COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M's 9-3 regular season has been rewarded with a trip to the Cotton Bowl.
The Cotton Bowl announced Tuesday afternoon that it had selected the Aggies to play in the Jan. 7 prime-time game in Cowboys Stadium.
A&M will face a Southeastern Conference squad - most likely LSU. The Aggies haven't played in the Cotton Bowl since the 2004 season.
A&M started the season 3-3 but reeled off six consecutive victories, including wins over Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas, to finish the regular season as one of the nation's hottest teams.
The Aggies finished tied for first with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the Big 12 South with 6-2 records, but OU earned the nod in the league title game against the Cornhuskers courtesy of its higher BCS rank (ninth compared to 14th for OSU and 18th for A&M).
The game will be the Aggies' 12th trip to the Cotton Bowl and their first since 2005.
