Buford he made gettysburg a possible. Longstreet was a brilliant man later critisized by his peers for becoming a republican. Longstreet has to be my favorite from the civil war. Washington almost lost out in the early days to Gates but the things he did were just awesome far and away. Grant was well not a great general but understood his job and got it done. Lee certainly was a better commander. Grant was no pansy like other union army commanders this is why I toss out Meade.

Custer lead his men through arrogance on a suicide mission that ended as such.

    1. Patton
    2. MacArthur
    3. Grant
    4. Stonewall Jackson(although I think he was such a hardass that he might have been fragged by his own crew instead of being mistaken for Union)
    5. Norman Schwarzkopf
    6. for Honorable Mention goes to General Burnside if only for the wild sideburns and for creating a firearm[:D]

#1 for worst General for me would be McClellan

Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Doolittle may have been flyboys, but they were great generals. As far as the ground pounders are concerned; Omar Bradley isn't far from the top five. IMHO

All you folks who think Pershing was a good general really need to read a decent biography of him, not the fluff that the military and/or his own cheerleaders put out. The only reason that he got to be a general was that he married into it!!!!!!! Yea, look it up. He got rank because he married well. Sound like a guy you want to follow anywhere?
