The Chatham County Police Department is asking residents to provide the serial numbers to firearms in order to help police find them if they are stolen.
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

The correct response is to have the SN recorded somewhere, so you can give them IF it is stolen.

Does anyone here NOT have their SN's written down somewhere safe?

With every sale I include a copy of ATF Form P3312.8 and encourage my customers to keep it up to date and not to keep it with their firearms. It's free from the BATFE.

I've had more than one customer come back to me to look up a serial number for a lost or stolen gun.

My insurance agent offered to have a list of my firearms on file with my homeowners policy. I sorta responded that I had heard what he said but no no no, not gonna do that. Just none of his biness. I keep a list of SNs, of the scopes too. Two actually. One at home, another in the safety deposit box in case of fire.

Quite often lately I've wished I only had 2 to worry about [:(], but it's my addiction and I need my "fix" regularly [:)]
