Hopefully it can be refined to the point where it will accept a more aerodynamic projectile.

Interesting that you post this as I was down at Dahlgren two weeks ago getting parts for our 16"/50 Mk 7 from their boneyard and one of the enginners working on this rail gun took us to the building in which it is located! Got an up front looksee at what could be our next naval weapon! Unbelievable! The building is full of nothing but electrical backups for the generation of the powerful electrical pulses needed to fire the sabot through an open breech! They have different size sabots that are fired out over the Potomac River as the back of the building opens up to the Dalhgren firing range over the river. 8000' per second! Can you imagine? He told us that the first time they fired it they saw a turkey hunkering down between the barrel and the water (about 1/4m or so) on the range and the sabot went right over him! Can you imagine the feeling of that thing sucking the wind as it flies over your head? Quite something to see in person.

A great couple of years for my Navy.

Successful anti-pirate raids, Bin Laden dead, ship launched anti-ballistic missile shots worked, new railgun up and working, new Littoral Combat Ships both work fine, electromagnetic catapults progressing nicely, our budget is remaining fairly flat, a new movie about the SEALS--overall nothing to complain about.

    GO NAVY!
