300-acre facility expected to open within 2 years

The Foundation for Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks along with Winchester Ammunition and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for McIvor Creek Shooting Facility at Charles Ray Nix Wildlife Management Area near Sardis.

The $2.8 million project includes a 15-station sporting clay range, two skeet ranges with a trap range overlaid in each, a 5-stand range, a pistol range, 100-yard and 300-yard rifle ranges, and a 3D archery range.

According to Billy Redd, President and CEO of the Foundation for Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, the project is the result of partnering between the foundation, Winchester Ammunition, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

"This is a large project," Redd said. "It has everything.

"There's not another range in Mississippi even remotely close to it. It's going to be a world-class shooting facility."

Redd said the project is expected to be complete with two years and shooters will have plenty of room when the facility opens.

"It's about 300 acres," Redd said. "With a 15-stage sporting clay course, that takes up a lot of space."

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with Gov. Phil Bryant and Winchester Ammunition President Tom O'Keefe in attendance.

"Winchester is honored to be the major donor to what will be an extremely impressive shooting range facility," said Tom O'Keefe, president of Winchester Ammunition. "This is an opportunity to provide avid outdoorsmen, women and youth, a safe and friendly environment in a state that deeply respects shooting sports activities. Our contribution underscores Winchester Ammunition roots in Mississippi and strong commitment to the citizens of the state."

To get to Charles Ray Nix WMA from Sardis, take US 51 south to Davis Chapel Road, then turn west onto Davis Chapel Road and travel approximately 3.5 miles to the WMA entrance.
