Today I picked up 3 neat hatchets for $3 each. One is a Briar Edge Service Tool hewing framing hatchet that is completely flat on one side and beveled on the other.
I also got a Plumb hatchet and another Plumb hatchet marked with the Boy Scouts of America emblem. All 3 are in fairly decent shape and will be easy rescue projects. Also picked up a couple of Ridgid pipe wrenches, an Irwin adjustable drill bit in a vintage box, and a 2 mantle Coleman lantern. Got everything including the 3 hatchets for $20. I love garage sales.
Any of you hatchet/axe guys familiar with the flat on one side Briar Edge hatchet?
Looks like this one.

from splitting your wood down the grain as a double bevel hatchet might.
Much in the same way a chisel is worked differently depending upon the location of the bevel.
The ones I've seen had straight handles. "Hewing" was usually done with the log on a raised support.

I have been on the look out to find a good one to make wood chips for my smoker.
