6.5 Jap reloads

Anyone have a load for the 6.5 Jap using 160grn cast bullets?

None of my data goes past 143 gr.

If you don't have any luck finding 160 cast bullet loads, for the 6.5 Japanese. On the on-line, cast bullet forums.

You might try searching for comparable loads, for the .260 Remington. As far as I know, the capacity/volume for both cartridges are similar. The load for one would put you in the ballpark for the other.

Given the strength and durability of the Arisaka Type 38 Japanese rifle. Any reduced velocity .260 Remington cast bullet load, would be a piece of cake.

The Lyman 42nd edition reloaders handbook lists a 156gr cast bullet with suggested loads: 27gr-HiVel; 29gr-4895; 28gr-3031; 29gr-4064; 29gr-4320; 35gr-4350; 37gr-4831; 29gr-H380.

My old Lyman manual lists a 160 jacketed RN with the following:
IMR 3031 25Gr = 1800fps to 28GR = 2020fps
IMR 4895 27Gr = 1824fps to 28Gr = 2049fps
IMR 4064 28Gr = 1868fps to 31Gr = 2087fps
IMR 4320 29Gr = 1915fps to 32GR = 2123fps
H335 28Gr = 1805fps to 31Gr = 2070fps
The heaviest cast bullet, with gas check they list is 143 grain and the only powder listed for both bullets is IMR 4895 from 26Gr =1858fps to 32Gr = 2272fps

Hope this gives you some basis for calculating a starting load.

draftee, 336marlin: The loads listed in the 42 ed. LYman Reloaders Handbook are for jacketed bullets. The pictures show a lead bullet but the column heading states "JACKETED BULLETS." At the end of the 6.5 Jap data there are five cast bullet loads (top of pg. 122), the heaviest weight 140 grs / 20.0 gr. 4198 / 1721 fps. Searching my reloading manuals, I did not find ANY 6.5 mm loads for a 160 gr. lead bullet. I think you will have to research some cast bullet information to get correct data.
