Vintage Redfield 2x-7x accu range

I recently picked up a Model 70 Pre 64 it has a 1950's Vintage Redfield 2-7 on it that is holding a great zero.

My question is how does the scale inside the scope work? Scale goes from 200 yards to 600 yards. Is this scale really used to judge yardage or is it simply for your recticle pleasure?

From what I remember in 1960s when the rangefinding was introduced with these scopes. The way it supposed to work, was to place the two lines up against a known distance (18 or 24 inches), like the top of a deer's back to the bottom of chest. When the magnification power was turned up or down to fit the two lines for the measured distance, the power of magnification would then be the estimated range of the target.

I think the 3x9 was used by the Marine Corp snipers to estimate target distances. Back then, Redfield was a good scope. You are lucky to have one in good shape and working well.

I have a Redfield 4-12 with Accu-trac and the top turret has yardage marks on it.As he describes you turn the power up or down to fit a deers back to the bottom of the chest inside the two lines.Look at the scale inside the scope and then adjust the turret to the proper distance.My scope came with three different turrets and a chart to tell you which one to use depending on caliber,bullet weght etc.

I have never really used the Accu-trac system but the scope itself has proven very reliable for 25 years.

I was really struggling with how to operate it properly and I did not have the diopter set for me so I could not see the two wires, man they are close together!! Very cool, thank you for all the information!

Does anyone know what range of bullet weights these were set for if it did not have the changeable dial in the turret?
