    February 1953.

I am currently conducting a research survey for the Model 43 in preparation for an article that I am writing about them. If your friend has no objections, I would like to get some additional information about his Model 43 rifle.

Bert, I have (3) 43's, what do you want to know about them?

Yes, I am a current member. I will email you.And thanks for leading the effort to study these fine little rifles..

Quick story, one of my rifles is a 22 Hornet Deluxe. It was bought new by a local sheep farming family. When I was a kid, the sheep family's sons and I were friends, and they sometimes talked about the "dog gun". Years later I was able to buy the "dog gun". It got it's name because it was bought and used to shoot dogs that were in chasing the sheep, and by all reckoning, accounted for 100's of dogs over the last 50 years.

This is the same family that bought the nickel steel barreled model 52 Winchester that I now own!

    1. Complete serial number
    2. Caliber
    3. Variation (e.g. Standard or Special)
    4. If the serial number is < 8,000, does it have a straight, or swept bolt.

I can provide the exact date of manufacture with the serial number. If memory serves, I believe that you are a WACA member? If so, contact me via email, and I will send you a copy of my current survey document.

I have a 43 Deluxe in 218 Bee, serial # has an "A" suffix - I can look up when I get home. Worthwhile to send?

    Yes, please do.

The "A" suffix was added in the 16700 - 16900 serial number range, and at the same time the serial number was moved from the left side of the front frame ring over to the right side of the frame ring.

Thus far, I have identified when nearly all of the production change were made, including when Winchester began drilling & tapping them for a scope.
