Well simply put if the receiver is long on a .308win cartridge then it is probably a long action. If it is short on a 30-06 cartridge then it is a short action. Why don't you just tell us what the rifle and caliber is that you are trying to figure out. True short actions are relatively new on the market. Over the years there have been many custom rifles built where a long action has been cut down to short. Also there have been short cartridges chambered on really long actions, like the pre64 Win chambered in 22 hornet. Long cased rounds will simply not fit in the mag well of short actions, but long actions chambered for short cases often have filler blocks to take up the slop. Tell us more about what you are trying to figure out and we can problem give better answers.

    Sgt. Glock,

Which brand? you will generally find short actions in the 3 1/4" to 3 1/2" range and long actions in the 3 3/4" to 4" range. To be more exact though you would need to give the brand name to actually measure between the fore and aft bedding screws.
