I just purchased a used Colt Combat Commander .45 cal. and would like to use the Serial Numbers to trace the guns history; is this something I can do without going through the police? Just curious.

BATFE and police can do it but I think you are out of luck .

    Perry Shooter is correct.

Federal law prohibits the government from maintaining a data base with the "history" of firearms. However, the Treasury Dept maintains a data base of stolen firearms.

The only records for firearms not stolen are the forms & bound books maintained by importers, dealers, plus state/local registries in socialist states. When Law Enforcement agencies need to track a firearm, they start with the manufacturer, & then visit as many dealers/state agencies as they can; often, the trail ends with a private transaction that can be traced no further.
