16 gauge 2 1/2 inch chamber question

edited April 2015 in Ask the Experts
Have been reloading 16 ga 2 1/2 inch low pressure loads for various European
SxS marked nitro proof 2 1/2 . Would it be acceptable to use a 20 gauge mate chamber insert And fire 2 3/4 lite 20 gauge loads? Does a gauge mate reduce pressure since
It is a over bore.? Have used sub gage mates in 2 3/4 chambers and got really good
Patterns and sealing of the wad.

I would think it was ok if the 16 nitro proof stuff is in good shape. Does your chamber adapter fit, perhaps turn the outside front 1/4" down some so it will fit.

16 gauge .663 20 gauge .615 I think the lip on a plastic wad will easily cover the .048 difference in bore size, the old nitro card wad not so much.

I have a C. Grundig 16ga SxS that I had a pair of 28ga chamber mates made for. Never a problem and it shoots a good pattern.
