How fast does a 22 LRHP have to be going to still reliably expand?

Most 22 LR HP's do not expand at any speed, so if the bullet is moving at 1300 fps or 500 fps it does not matter. The key to a 22 LR is the penetration of the bullet more than any percieved expansion.

I do not know the answer to your question. Considering 22LRHP rounds come in about 1000 different congiguration from what seem a zillion different companies it could only be answered for your particular round anyway. I advise contacting the company.

However I have used LRHP since I was a kid and have shot thousands of criiters with them. I will testify to the fact that they do most certianly expand. I've dug the bullets out of racoons, foxes, coyotes, yes they expand.

    Of course they expand!
Probably a good minimum expansion speed is 900-1000 FPS.

I saw an interesting article in either HANDGUNS or GUNS & AMMO about a year ago, concerning expansion of .22 hp when fired from short barreled revolvers - into ballistic gelatin. The best expander at the lower velocities generated from a 2.5" barrel was the Winchester Super X hollow point at about .35". The hyper velocity rounds (Viper, Aquila SE, etc.), with the exception of the CCI Stinger, all lost alot of velocity and had minimal expansion from the short barrel. The Stinger didn't expand at all below 1000 fps. Above 1000 fps the Stinger expanded to an average diameter of over .40".

FWIW- do not know about the hyper-velocity rounds, but standard 22 LR reaches max velocity in about 12 inches of rifle barrel. longer than that, slows down a smidge.

My favorite is the standard CCI LRHP. They always seemed to work well out of everything I ever shot them in and were very accurate as well. They worked in a browning buckmark I used on racoons and squirrels when everything elso I tried jammed it. I have rolled out a lot of Racoons and squirrels with these. Not to mention all the other game I have killed with them. The hypervelocity rounds are fun but I never noticed they were any deadlier.

I did some testing. Shot high speed HP and some subsonic HPs into ballistic gelatin at 100 yards. Both expanded into the classic mushroom. The subsonic not quite as much as the high speed but it certainly expanded nicely. MV on the subsonic at the muzzle was 1052 fps.

I've also hunted a lot with 22 short HP and they expand as well, but they could be softer than the 22LRHP. They just always worked I guess I really never gave it much thought.

Thanks for the test results, that's that and now we all know.
