Older Browning shotgun DOM please

I just picked up an older 12 ga. Browning Automatic Shotgun. The stock has been replaced with an ill fitting stock and the original horn butt plate is a horrible fit. I am going to look into replacing the stock with a better one. Can some one give me the approximate age of this shotgun? It has SN 44231 on the underside of the receiver and on the barrel is Browning Arms Company St Louis, Mo. I can't find 12 gauge anywhere on the shotgun but a 2 3/4" 12 ga shell fits in the chamber. It appears to be a full choke since the end of the barrel is about the size of a dime. Thanks

    Thanks Mike,
The safety is on the butt stock end of the trigger guard (rear?). I guess that means it is post WWII? The person that gave it to me said he was pretty sure it was used when his family bought it and it has sat in a closet since to late 1950's because of the damaged stock. It looks like a project that may turn out nice.

Hello, since you indicate the safety is at the rear of the trigger guard and the serial number is 5 digits, is the serial number preceded by an "H" or an "L", such as H44231? If so, it would date the gun to about 1954.

Thanks old colts, Yes, there is a "H" about 1/4" above the serial number. Now to find a nice replacement butt stock that fits.

    Old-Colts is right. That letter "H" = 1954.

Just so you have the complete picture when your gun was manufactured the "H" designated a Standard Weight gun and the "L" designated a Light Weight gun.
