saum values

I'm noticing that the remington model 7 7mm saum is being auctioned for less than $500 by multiple traders. Is there a reason why this particular model/caliber is so low? Is the caliber the problem? Is the action the problem? Is this just a model/caliber that never caught on with the public? Or is something else going on? I'm thinking of buying one, but don't want to be left holding the proverbial bag.

I would suspect that the SAUM is not long for this world and will become a handloading only proposition within the near future (5-10 years). But, I have been known to be wrong before.
I looked at a couple of the ads over on the Auction side and I don't see anything that leads me to believe that there is anything different for this rifle and cartridge than any of the others that might come up as being overstocked or in stock for too long. The funny part is that some of the Model Sevens even have a $50.00 rebate included in the box! What a deal!
In my opinion, the M7's 22" barrel is little too short for this cartridge especially when using factory loads. However, this is the nature of marketing a lighter weight, short barreled hunting rifle. But and this is a big but, the cartridge has been in the limelight of the long range bench and prone shooters since it appeared on the market. The performance is superb for 1,000 yard target shooting. I've been shooting two versions for the last year and a half and find the cartridge and a few of the bullets available to be a real treat to shoot.
My opinion is that more folks ought to try this cartridge and rifle combination and quit reading the idiots that write in the rags.
Best.
Some one said it's like a 280 Double Ackley Improved, and any one that likes the 7mm's know how good that one is.... The saum just seems perfect to me....
Two other ones I load for shoot as good as mine so there must be something to it......
I think you are right on with your assessment of why they are selling at the level they are selling at. It's a good round but the marketing department doesn't seem to have a clue or the ability to make the R&D department do what is needed, or vice-versa. As nn pointed out he is shooting them successfully in the competition/LR mode with a rifle built for that. That clearly points out the value of the case. Remington needs to quit listening to gun rag writers and figure out what works for good ballistics. They have done this to a number of good calibers. They hear the hunting crowd, which is still 80% of the rifle buying community, wants a short fast rifle. They then build the most economical case they can, in a short action no less, and then stick a short barrel on it and ruin the ballistic advantage. This would be (is) a great case had all the factors been plugged into the problem correctly.
So, what you are looking at is a great deal...with hardly anyone really knowing it.
My opinion is that more folks ought to try this cartridge and rifle combination and quit reading the idiots that write in the rags.
I agree completely. There are more cartridges than this one that that statement applies to.

The Ballistic tips and Accubonds seem to give the best accuracy, but first chance I get I'll try the 168 VLD Bergers even if they are mainly hunting rifles....... I have seen first hand what those Bergers do on big game.....
