WW2 Single-Shot Shotgun

My Uncle Jim was in the National Guard in the 30's and early 40's (before the U.S. entered the war). He said that all of the state national guard rifles were transferred to the regular army just after Pearl Harbor. There was a shortage of military rifles for the army. The guardsmen were issued with Springfield single-shot shotguns. They were on duty guarding steel mills and fuel tank farms from both Nazi and Japanese saboteurs. These Springfields were even stamped US on the barrel or receiver. Anyone have any additional information on this topic? Thanks folks.[?]
