What does the number signify when someone reports these numbers to specify barrel erosion of a Garand M1 rifle?

ThanksAldo35

The lower the number the better.

as above 1 to 2= as new, 3 to 4= very shootable, 5 to 6= shootable but don't expect much, 7 & = up time to rebarrel

There are actually 2 ways that barrel wear is measured: the front end of the more is called "muzzle wear", & on the breech end it is called "throat erosion". Wear on either end can affect accuracy. But, paradoxically, sometimes a well worn barrel will turn out to be very accurate.

There is a different gauge to measure each end, & measurements are relative to a new barrel measuring .300" in diameter.
