So based on the chart my .22 rf M550-1 stamped O XX would have been made in July 1951; but I'm confused on my .308 M700, which with a four digit serial number, and having bought it new in January 1963, would expect that it was made in 1962, but the markings are P I 44; the I is stamped with the top indented, but it feathers away to the bottom, so it could be a J, with the curved part of the J just not showing; If this is the case, then it would be June 1962, which would be about right, but then what's thew significance of the 44?

    Hello Ray...

Remingtom did not use an "I" date code for the first time until 1976, so you are probably correct in your assumption that it is a poorly stamped "J". I have no idea what the numerals mean, but they are not associated with the date code (at least according to Remington).
