Kimber question

I was told today that Kimber doesn't make their slides or frames. I was told that Smith and Wesson makes them. Is this true? I seem to recall that Kimber Glotes about how close their tolerances are and how everything is manufactured under the strictest quality control and on the greatest state of the art equipment. Can you help me? I told the guy I thought he was wrong but now I need to know, if only for my piece of mind.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

What is the difference between a Kimber and a Kimber Custom Shop?

I shot my friend's Kimber Custom Shop Ultra Carry, and I really liked it, but I've never shot any other Kimber to compare it to.

    Thanks!

I recently bought a Kimber Compact Custom made in Yonkers, New York. I did not find information in the "Blue Book" on this location of manufacture. Is this an older model for Kimber? I would also like to know the value of this piece. It retains 85-90% of original finish. Just has some bluing wear from apparent holstering.

I am looking at a used Pro Elite and Pro CDP II. I have been told to go with the Pro Elite because it lacks the Schwartz safety and it will be easier to tune the trigger. Any pros on cons on these two guns. thanks, mk

This is the base model, called Custom II

Here's one from he custom shop,

    1911-Custom.png

    Just more fancy [;)]

I bought a gen 1 Custom Target when first out. It's the base model with adj sights.
You can go from the Custom II up to the custom and anywhere in-between depending on what you want to spend.
    Check all here, http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols

EDIT, Is there any work done to the mechanics, or is it just visual?

Custom shop pistols have better triggers, like they should [;)]

I can't speak to costs or specific model differences, but Kimber claimes the Custom Shop models are their best guns, and one would hope that they "should" have tuned triggers and actions.

To my eye, there are quite a few differences between the two guns in those images other than cosmetics.

Top gun has underbarrel accessory rail, front slide serrations, solid trigger, lanyard ring, and "memory pad" (ie bulging) grip safety. It also looks to have some sort of utilitarian ceramic or epoxy finish on the slide. Grips on there look like relatively high friction serrated laminate (or maybe Micarta) for "duty" use. So to me this is basically a high end duty/service type gun, something someone expecting a fight (eg SWAT guy, soldier, etc) might like to carry in a duty holster.

Bottom gun has no front serrations, skeletonized "match" type trigger, no lanyard ring, no rail, more cosmetic fancy slide finish, and "bobtail" rounded rear grip edge. These have the half checkered grips which are more of a concealed carry thing to reduce snagging and draw time, but to allow some better retention than pure smooth grips. This one is more of a high end concealed carry gun.

Which things are better/worse are largely a matter of personal preference, and intended personal use for the gun.

EG, if you're never going to put the thing on a lanyard, maybe you don't need a lanyard ring. If you know you're going to want a light on there, you'll want the gun with the rail, etc.
