    Hello buddy1,

Winchester's manufacturing specs for barrel length were 24 +/- 3/16 of an inch. I have found many Model 1885 barrels that are + 1/8-inch of the given length. It is my belief that the + length was intentionally built in to allow for headspacing at the breech end, and squaring the muzzle face. I used the Model 1885 as a basis because I am most familar with it, but I am positive that Winchester used the same practices on all of the various models and barrels back in the old days. So yes, the barrel lengths were "nominal" versus exact.
