Recommendations for pistol for a wife?

I've got my wife registered for the NRA handgun course in a few weeks and it seems like a great time to start her with her own pistol as she'll get a Concealed Carry permit shortly afterwards.

She's 5'4" with smallish hands and slender fingers but fairly strong. The grips on our Browning HiPower fit her hand okay as do the Beretta 92, and 9mm recoil is fine, but she doesn't care for our .45's recoil so 9mm or .40 seems like the range while I want her to have more rounds than a revolver...and a barrel length long enough to actually hit targets more than a few feet away without a thousand rounds on the range of practice.

So I'd greatly appreciate thoughts and suggestions on makes and models since so many of the folks on this forum have already gone through this search and decision.

Personal defense use and range shooting only, not a hunting or target weapon.

It'll be a new gun too although I mostly buy used.

Sig Sauer 226?
Springfield XD?
Glock?
Beretta?
something else? Springfield wasn't on my radar except for the glowing posts about it here.

And are the laser sighting systems worth it, never shot with one before and rarely seen them.

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

Well your question is pretty subjective. You just have to get her somewhere and let her shoot a few.

Generally if it's big enough to shoot well, have your light recoil requirements and have more than 5-6 shots, It'll be too big and heavy for many to carry concealed.
A compromise will have to be made.
Laser sights allow you to shoot accurately with the pistol in any position. You don't have to get behind the sights.

Tell her to get a personal defense shotgun for trunk the car with a pistol grip, 8 round capacity and 18 in barrel. For conceal carry, get a small Colt or Smith revolver,(always ready to go!). Get a Colt 1911, Awesome shotgun(see car weapon), and an AR for home.[:)][:D][8D][;)]

Suggest you take her to a gun shop and let her try as many different handguns as you can find...pick the one that feels the best and most comfortable for her. If she is a newbe, and it sounds like she is, suggest a revolver over a pistol, in a high stress situation much less can go wrong...just aim and pull, no worry about safeties, chambering a round, misfire etc. Would suggest nothing bigger than 9MM, if you must have a pistol or 38 Special with a revolver, if she likes a revolver chambered for 357 Mag, get it, but shoot 38 Special or 38 Special +P; full house 357 Mag from a light weight revolver can be a little much for a newbe. What ever you get have her practice and practice. My wife uses a S&W Model 60, and she has practiced...I would not want to be on the receiving end of the 5 rounds from her, all in the 10 ring and all fast double action.

Look at the Springfield sub compacts on gunbroker to see what they look like.. Only 3inches long. My wife is going to look at it too...
