Weatherby Mark V 458 Win

I have a Mark V serial number 28366. It has a APEX 458 Win barrel (APEX stamped on barrel) and a beautiful thumb hole stock. I've read that the serial number is a Made in Germany Sauer action. I located some old info on APEX barrels. Apparently, APEX has been through a couple hands and I never really got any exact data. I don't know anything about the thumbhole stock.

I found this info: The Southgate Mark V's had serial numbers up to about 162xx, and then they went to J.P.Sauer in W.Germany, who started at serial number 20,001.

I assume it was a "custom job" by someone and not the Weatherby Custom Shop (???). They used an older German action, ordered a 458 barrel, and got a good looking thumbhole stock. Also, I thought I read that the 458 was only made in the Dangerous Game. However, the action is too old.

Any idea on how this gun came to be what it is?

Thanks

    aaronrs,

"Any idea on how this gun came to be what it is?"

While you've attempted to provide a good description, it would be most helpful for us if you could post some sharp photographs of your rifle.

My guess would be that it's a custom rifle from the Apex Rifle Company using one of their barrels. Another guess would be that the thumbhole stock was made by Harry Lawson later since this sounds like his style. I'll see if I can find a picture tomorrow. It's possible that Apex just did the re-barrel and then the owner sent it to Lawson for the stock later.

Apex Rifle Company Rifle manufacturers located in Sun Valley, California, c.1952.

Post some photographs so we can see some of the details and overall.

    Best.

    ADDED:

An example of a Harry Lawson thumbhole buttstock:
