How many rounds til a 229 needs a refurb? We carry em at work (DoD) but I'm buying my own and am looking at used.

BTW First post. Thanks for the assistance.

Welcome to the Forum! The Sig is a great gun, you can't get better. I know a guy who has put 1000s or rounds through his and it is still going strong. I have never heard any endurance test numbers but I bet you can find the original Army testing on line...they picked the Beretta. My two cents, I think the Sig is better.

Generally for all my handguns I try to replace the recoil spring about every 5000rds, but thats about it. And keep shooting until something shows excessive wear or breaks. Its always good to keep an extra front sight in stock as they do have a tendency to shoot out or break (maybe thats just my luck). I have never ever seen anyone wear out a Sig. I've seen some pretty well abused and beat up ones that were still shooting.

Thanks 5mm. I'm certain the SIG is the better gun. I've seen shot out Berettas but never a SIG. I really believe there were some politics involved in the Beretta choice...but I guess that's fodder for another forum.

The story goes that Beretta found out SIGs bid via some monkey business then undercut SIG.

Anyway, even assuming the p226 SIG is better than the Beretta 92FS, that doesn't mean that you can extrapolate that to the SIG 229 (which might wear slightly differently).

I've heard that the p226 guns hold up to 50,000 rounds.

I don't know the number for the 229, but for any "normal" shooter, its probably going to be pretty hard to wear one out.

Actually 'wearing out' of the gun isn't really an issue with SIG pistols.

SIG has a suggested spring replacement schedule that starts with the recoil spring at 5000 rounds. After this they suggest replacing the slide catch lever spring, the trigger bar spring and decocking lever spring at 10,000 rounds. All others are at the 20,000 round mark.

I realize we'll have people here telling about firing lots more, but the vast majority of used pistols out there have less than 1,500 rounds through them. Police trade-in guns in particular are usually very low mileage, with the vast majority only going through 150 rounds or less per year.
