anyone know if the K & N frames and the smith 656 frame are different? Looking to grips to fit

    There is no such model 656 from S&W. Are you asking about a 686-.357mag [?] If so it is a "L" frame and some "K" frame grips will fit.

    "N" frame grips will only fit "N" frame guns. The "L" frame and "K" frame guns use the same size grips. You will also need to know if the gun is a square or round butt. It makes a difference when selecting grips.

    Do you mean the Smith 65-6? That would be a K-frame.

    If instead you mean the Smith 686, that model is an L-frame, though the L-frame uses the same grips as the K frame.

    The N frame is the "large" frame, and it uses a different size/pattern grip.

    As mentioned, you need to know if the gun is a square butt or a round butt, since the grips are different between the two. See here:
