Bright Stainless pistols at auction

Hello,

This is a question about the abundance of the Colt Bright Stainless, Python/Cobra/Anaconda, as well as the Smith and Wesson snub nose models.

Could anyone advise, on how to verify the authenticity of these as auction items?

Much appreciated,

Phil

If it comes with the original box, it will have it on the information panel. Ask for more photo's.

You are right Phil, it's gotten difficult to be certain that a finish is original. There are now folks selling "reproduction" box end labels. And, lacking the original cardboard box, some guns are put in a later plastic box with an appropriate label.

If you are familiar with SN ranges of S&W snubbies, you can sometimes tell that the finish doesn't match the YOM. But, proof may be difficult.

I almost bought a beautiful snubbie chrome smith 38. why didn't I? because you had to put your own serial number on it! that's why it was chromed. someone had stolen it and took the numbers off and chromed it. whoever did it, was good as it looked factory. if they would have added the serial number it would look authentic. im quite sure there are a lot of "fake" chrome snake guns out there. just like anything else if there is money in it, someone will fake it.

Short of a factory letter it is difficult to be positive of the guns original finish. Some of the bright stainless Colts began life with a stainless finish and have been buffed to a near mirror finish.
