Adjustment Rings for Browning A5, et al

I just bought another long recoil operated shotgun. Over the years, I've encountered a few different ways to set the rings for various shot shell loads. What I do is: Rub fine steel wool on the magazine tube to clean and polish it. Then put some light oil on the tube and wipe it ALL off, leaving only a trace/memory of lube on it. I re-install the recoil spring and put the washer on with the cup side toward the muzzle for heavy loads, or the flat side towards the muzzle for light loads. And then, slide on the bronze friction ring, and re-install the barrel.

What set-up is appropriate? I have an A5, a Savage 775, Remington 11-48, Ithaca 300.

EDIT: Charlie, The 300XL is a gas gun. The earlier 300 is recoil operated. But thanks, anyway.
