An older gun dealer whose wisdom I value said given the choice he would take a 357sig over the 45.Velocity was the main reason behind his choice. Opinions please. Also he was not all impressed with the hydra-shock rounds either. Any suggestions about other protection type rounds in 357 sig or .45. I have to say I love this info board. Saves a lot of leg work. Thanks much. "WE WILL NOT FAIL"

Based on what Hornady has published in their latest catalog, the .357 Sig has more velocity. and I'll hear about this......more energy, but from expirience....less recoil

This is one of those, "In the end, you'll have to make up your own mind" questions. So, I'll just submit the following for your consideration. I've been associated with the .45 from about age 16 onward. Too much onward. I still bet my life on it almost every day. However, I was introduced to the .357 Sig a couple of years ago, and have a great deal of respect for it. It comes down to this, I think; they are slightly different tools for slightly different situations. The .357 Sig was created to approximate a .357 Magnum in a semi-auto. Sometimes the penetration of a .357 Mag./Sig is more desirable for accomplishing a certain task than a .45 ACP. In days rapidly becoming bygone a .45 was the very best combat round--a real fight stopper. Now, with body armor of various weights and levels, a .357 Sig might be what you need, especially for the thinner armor. Additionally, the bottle neck shape of the .357 Sig lends itself to more reliable feeding. The ACP is rather like trying to jam the cork into a wine bottle. The .357 is durn sure a cut above the 9mm the Govt. (and USMC) is using. I find the recoil to be about the same (.357/.45). All this having been said, I'll stick with the .45; but it's hard for old dogs to learn new tricks.

On the recoil, to me, the 357s has more of a slap where the venerable 45 has more of a push. On the subject of ammo, I have always been partial to the Speer Gold Dots. Seems like they perform more consistantly over a broader range of velocities than most. The new Triton Quik-Shoks look to be very promising, pre-fragmented so they break into 3 pieces causing a very nasty wound channel.Whatever ammo you decide on should also be the most defensable in a court if you ever need to. For that reason I would suggest using whatever your LEOs use. Makes it a lot harder for some shyster lawyer to say you were using viscous, killer bullets when the Peace Officers are using them.

With my Glock 31 the recoil is very similar to the 45 with a little more barrel flip but comes back to aim quickly. This is a full size pistol don't know about compact. For velocity info. try www.greent.com/40page/ 357sig is now my favorite caliber.

I also have the Glock 31, but after reading the Gun Test Magazines big brother little brother test of Fullsize and compacts of the same manufacture, I bought a 33, then went and bought a 32 also, I am single and have too much money, least that is what my dad says, I love the 33 in .357 sig, I added that little finger extension to the mags, and with the Hi Cap 23's it is a great lttle gun, and I notice no defference be tween it or the 31/32 at all.....love it love it love it.....Buy the .357 sig, you'll be glad you did, plus your assuring that they don't quit making the ammo....hehe
