Kimber Question

I was told today that Kimber doesn't make their slides or frames. I was told that Smith and Wesson makes them. Is this true? I seem to recall that Kimber Glotes about how close their tolerances are and how everything is manufactured under the strictest quality control and on the greatest state of the art equipment. Can you help me? I told the guy I thought he was wrong but now I need to know, if only for my piece of mind.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

What is the difference between a Kimber and a Kimber Custom Shop?

I shot my friend's Kimber Custom Shop Ultra Carry, and I really liked it, but I've never shot any other Kimber to compare it to.

    Thanks!

I recently bought a Kimber Compact Custom made in Yonkers, New York. I did not find information in the "Blue Book" on this location of manufacture. Is this an older model for Kimber? I would also like to know the value of this piece. It retains 85-90% of original finish. Just has some bluing wear from apparent holstering.

I am looking at a used Pro Elite and Pro CDP II. I have been told to go with the Pro Elite because it lacks the Schwartz safety and it will be easier to tune the trigger. Any pros on cons on these two guns. thanks, mk

Kimber buys their forgings from S&W which is just a hunk of metal cast in the basic shape of a frame and slide, this is by no means a slide or frame yet, Kimber does do their own machining ... and just for a bonus bit of info, Wilson Combat buys their forgings from Kimber ...

Kimber makes a big deal, in some of their promotional literature, showing some of their frames being milled from billets on contemporary CNC metalworking equipment. I can see them wanting to point up the best they can do; if they're buying forgings made from whomever but doing all their own machine work on the rough blanks, as long as they take the time & trouble to check the forgings for defects, the end product should be reliable & accurate. I'd rather they spend their time doing what they know how to do best.

Some models may be made from billet ... I haven't been keeping up like I used too since I dropped out of the "new modle every month club."

If they are still buying them from S&W because they are the second to none ... Smith's Metalurgists(sp?) are de best in de bidness ... at least thats what I've always heard ... I should have added that this is what I heard/read a couple years ago, pretty sure it still holds true, but things do change ...
