What is the nomenclature of the WW I Smith ??

Is it Model 1917, like the Colt ??

    Mr. Wilson,

    I believe the revolver you are refering to is:

    The 45 Hand Ejector U. S. Army - Model 1917

    ser. # range 1 - 209791 from 1917 till 1946 for both gov. & civilian sales.

    They were square butt N frame 5 screw 6 shot revolvers

    the chambers have a shoulder to head space the 45 acp without the moon clips. also would chamber the 45 auto rim.

    Approx. 163,600 were made for the U. S. Army from Sept.1917 to Jan. 1919. The frames of those are stamped "U. S. Army Model 1917" in 4 lines on the bottom of the butt (grip frame)

    Per "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition"
