Shipping a modern pistol out of California

I wanted to sell an MKII 22/45 on this site and live in the wonderous state of California. I thought I could just ship it off to an ffl in another state. Then I got an Email asking if I was an ffl or if I was going to ship from one here. My local gunshop says I must ship it through an ffl to an out of state ffl. They want $105 to ship it. They offered me $75 for the pistol a week ago because Ruger isn't going to pay California's extortion fee for ffl's in this state to be able to resell this out of production model? I ended the auction because the reserve value had not been met.

Could somebody tell me what I have to do to sell this? What are my options? Do I have to ship from an ffl here to an ffl out of state? If so how can I easily find an ffl in Orange County that has a reasonable fee? Can I pass all the fees onto the buyer? Should I just sell it to a private party here? Or? Help! This state is all messed up. I'm starting to think Arnold is the girly man [:D]

I think the restrictions are on inbound shipments/transfers. Not sure, but if so, perhaps you should re-list with:

Seller is not an FFL. Please check with your FFL dealer to insure that he is willing to accept a handgun from a non-FFL prior to placing a bid.

It will still cost you considerable funds to ship a handgun via common carrier. Best, Joe

your ffl is a rip-off, he can ship the pistol for <$15 (usps), plus his 'log in/out' time.

Your FFL is either lying to you or is misinformed. There is nothing in California law that requires an FFL to ship a handgun either in to or out of California.

the forementioned post is correct-your ffl dealer is a rip off artist taking advantage of your ignorance of law. The important thing to remember is each carrier has their own policies that you must conform to. Fedex, UPS, Post office, DHL etc. You can get all the information on the internet about these different policies. Then make up your own mind on who to use.

Rip off artiest, make sure the FFL you sending to will except your shipment as a non FFL with ID only!

If you want to search for another FFL, there is a search feature (by zipcode) for dealers on the Gunbroker site.

If you want to ship it yourself, you may only ship UPS Next Day Air (or Next Day Airsaver), or by Fedex Priority Overnight. Period. You must ship from a company customer counter (hub), not a packing/shipping store. You must declare the contents of your package. You must request an adult signature.

In addition to Givette's suggestion, you also need to note in your listing "Buyer pays actual UPS/Fedex Next Day Air charges". Or, you could indicate that the buyer must pay a flat fee of $30 or $40 to lessen the impact, knowing that you may have eat $20-30 of the shipping charge.

Thank you all for your help! I have relisted my Ruger Great Eight and changed it to buyer pays actual shipping costs. I'll figure out the rest after the auction has ended.

Oh yeah, Hey Mike I wondering what it costs to fire that wep in your pic once? Wanna part with it? Hehe, jk. I'll stick with my 870 Remington[8D] Thanks again.

    Be well,
    Darren
