i have a t-38 jap long rifle with the 00 mark in front of the serial #, did some research and found that this was built before wwi and was used during the jap-russian, brit war. after it was all over all rifles were to be dissabled and shipped to britian or russia where they were reblued and the wood redone. this one is all mismatched #'s which would be correct and totally redone as to arsenal standards of the time period. what is it worth as i have never run across another one marked or in this condition? no import marks thanks

I collected Arisaka's for years and I've never heard of the Japanese sending their rifles out to Britian or Russia for refurbishing. Where did you get this info?
The Japanese had their own Arsenals that were fully capable of any repairs they needed.

well in my research i found the gb and russia stomped the japs and instead of destroying the country the took all of the weapons, to be dismantled by the japs and sent to gbs and russias arsenals to be put back into use. i think it had something to do with saveing face or pride of the people this was before wwi very late 1800's i have found referance to the markings "00" but have never found another one in the steel only a picture. this is the oldest jap rifle i have, and most of the ones i have are the 99's, well if you think of anything else please let me know thanks again

My friend, you are in left field. In the RussoJapanese War of 1905, the Japanese soundly defeated the Russians. In 1945, the Russians fought the Japanese for a couple of days. They declared war after the atomic bombs were dropped.
I have many Type 38's with the 00 in front of the serial number. This usually means it was refurbished and/or issued to a school. During WWI, the British bought Arisakas to train their own troops and Kynoch loaded the ammunition for use in them.
You need a copy of Military Rifles of Japan by Honeycutt and it will answer most, if not all, of your questions.
No rifles were stripped and sent to England or Russia for refurbishing.

interesting what one finds on the net, i will try to refind the info and get the story straight about the gb and russia being allies and defeating the japs. but do you know the value of a "00" marked 38?

Without actually seeing it, considering that someone reworked it, no. A normal specimen with the mum would bring a few hundred right now.

ok found out that i was in the bleachers in left park not even on the field, lol, the 00 mark was a mark for taken out of service for what ever reason shotout, sold, or training. england and russia bought the rifles, most went to russia like some 600000 also the rifle is a t-30 must have been a late night, did find a web site on prices and they range on there (of course that is asking price) $695 for a fence post to $1800 minty. thanks for the help as it got my answer in a round about way and got the story straight!!!

P3skyking is correct. The 0's mean removed from (military) service and generally issued to a school as a trainer. (Not to be confused w/the smoothvbore trainer rifles the Japanese also made that fire blanks ONLY!).
A rifle thus removd from service was usually Arsenal refurbished, and should have had the Mum defaced. I think your $695. is WAY high for a mismatched, possibly defaced Mum school gun.
I would suggest you ask your questions over at the Gunboards.com Japanese weapons forum. I've been out of Arisaka collecting for several years. But that's where you'll IMO find the experts that are up to date on current values. Even Fred Honeycutt posts there. Or did when I used to.
