The 2-12x32 or 3-18 would be a nice choice from IOR.
Here you can get a QD mount and Leupold LR/T or Nightforce.
A 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 would be a good choice from leupold. I like the small objective 2.5-10 nightforce scope, but that is just me.

Look at these before you buy a HK clone, if you havent already. LWRC has .308 models worth looking at.. Also look at these.
Noveske N6, Based on the Armilite AR-10

FAR-308 Titan, based on the DPMS Adaptation of the Knight SR-25

There are a number of optic setups that would fit inside that framework but there are tradeoffs with almost every choice.
With a conventional scope eye alignment slows most shooters down, a variable X Scope with a low magnification bottom end like the 2x-12x or 2.5x-10x will help when you have to make close shots on moving, or multiple targets, but still there are better options in my opinion.
one is to attach a mini red dot onto the scope body of a high magnification scope, thus you have a red dot for fast close work and a magnified scope zeroed for longer shots. the drawbacks too this method is the mini-red-dot can be broken realtively easy. The laser module can be covered in mud. battery life, and a small window too aim through, aiming itself can be problemactic with certian stock and rifle designs. Most Mini red Setups like this would only be useful inside 100m..
Another Idea is a red dot and magnifier, EOtech has a model with a visual BDC. Add this with a 4X flip to the side magnifier and you have a scope that will be usefull to 600M. flip the magnifier out of the way and you have a red dot relfex sight.. Battery life is probably around 800-1000 hours with lithium batteries
Aimpoint has a 2x red dot that has a 3MOA dot, when you add this with a Aimpoint 3x magnifier, you have a 6x scope. You could use the Dot to measure realitive distance or hold over.. Battery life is about 30,000 hours.
In my opinion a big objective conventional scope would be cumbersome on a slim barreled 20" rifle, 40mm or smaller.. Save the big clunky stuff for a big clunky rifle...
