Winchester take down adjustment

I have a 1894 Winchester take down that I thought was tight until I noticed the magazine lever was not in it's slot. I know about the three screws and I have the proper screw drivers but have a little trouble getting good and square on the screws to put much pressure on them. Is there a proper procedure for doing this.
I have ordered new screws as it appears somebody might not have had the correct screw driver and buggered them up a little.

Press in with one hand and use a wrench or ratchet in the other hand to apply torque.
Bits are usually ground for a precise fit or you have a 5 gallon bucket of screwdrivers.
