I have the opportunity to buy a Savage 99 in 250-3000. I hunt white tail and wonder if the Savage will out perform my Marlin 30-30? I hunt brushy country and don't expect anything over 200 yds. Thanks

By leaps and bounds. The .250-3000, loaded with 34.5grs of IMR-4895, gives you about 2800 fps. This making the savage a 250-300yds gun if that's in your personal limit range. I'll mostlikely make some mad, but I think the 30-30, especially the hammer guns are dangerous for kids. I know, that's what I started with, and always found my self fumbling with the hammer. I don't like the fact that the hammer is in the back position while unloading the lever guns either. That and the fact, I think the 30-30 was good compared to the black powder stuff before it, but there are a lot better, lighter cartridges for kids. I just bought my daughter a 250-3000 in the Remington Classic 700. They can be real shooter also.

The Model 99 .250-3000 Savage is one of my all time favorite guns, and is good for anything up to and including mule deer. Jack O'Connor killed moose in Alaska with it, but I don't recommend trying that, as you will just make the moose mad at you. If you get the gun, you will love it. That action is one of the strongest lever actions ever made. It has a very mild recoil, and so is good for first time shooters and folks with small frames. It is accurate and shoots real flat. It has a very distinctive sound when shot and anyone who has shot them very much can recognize the sound from miles away. Get the gun, you can't go wrong with this tried and true classic.

As Umpimahken mentioned light recoil,it is much milder than the 243 Win.It would be perfect for a young person.Come ta think of it,it`s perfect for me too, does this mean that I`m young???~Sir Lord Beekeeper~
