Yep my SKS I just bought, first round chambered, went off and emptied the 30rnd mag. Yes it was on safe, and down range. So I put 1 rnd in the mag took it off safe and it slam fired again, this time the gas operating rod stuck back, when the bolt stayed back on an empty mag. I was then asked to leave the range with my weapon dissasembled.Took it back to the gun shop they want to charge me for repairs! Any Ideas?thanks

I'm no gun expert, but one thing an expert will need to know is ammo type. I have an SAR-1 and steer clear of commercial ammo, as the military stuff has harder primers, which guns such as yours and mine had in mind in their design. Something like Wolf ammo is a safer bet with SKS's and SAR's.

I understand that on some models of the SKS the fireing pin ,if upside down when assembled, can cause this. Best, Robert

You didn't say if your rifle is Chinese or Russian, or if it was new or used when you bought it. My guess is that it is Chinese (the subject of the previously mentioned legal action). I would also guess that a previous owner tried to "improve" the trigger pull, and you've seen the results of amateur gunsmithing. All SKS's were sold without factory warranty, so, even if it is new, that won't help. However, many states have an "implied warranty" statute, which requires that a product be suited for the purpose for which it was intended. Your gun shop should fix it for nothing; check with your state's Attorney General.Neal

I have had a Chinese SKS fire full auto when I let the bolt carrier fly forward. The sear is not holding back the hammer as it is supposed to do or the trigger bar is stuck up too high. It happens almost exclusively with cheap Chinese SKS's. My advice is get rid of the gun. It is junk and unsafe.

I would suspect that your firing pin is jammed in the forward position. Remove it and try another one to confirm this theory. I guarantee that the ammo is NOT at fault. If this fails, examine the bolt face. Could it have a burr or defect that would hold the FP in the forward position?I've used many SKS's, Chinese as well as Russ,Never had a serious problem.Good luck!Morty

I had the same thing happen to me. I had put an after market carbon stock on the gun. I installed a new trigger assembly but it did the same thing. I installed the original stock and it has not happened any more.

The problem is in the firing pin. The ammo that these guns was designed for was not like the ammo today, the primers were alot harder to set off. The pin on an sks has no stop or spring, so when you cock the gun the pin is traveling free and the pin hits the primer, causeing the bullet to fire, and the process starts over again until the mag is empty. The problem is the inertia of the pin. Replace the firing pin with a titanium one, very cheap fix, but a lighter pin will have less inertia and thus prevent the primer from igniting.
