Qs on Marlin 1895s

I'm looking for a new rifle before deer season and Marlin's 1985 (The GS in particular) caught my eye. I want a lever action and I like the looks of the SS and wood combo with the 1985GS. 45/70 is probably a bit big for whitetail but I'd like to get my hands on one of these anyway. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,Matt

One of the most popular rifles Marlin has had in a long, long time. Hard to keep in stock.Good choice.

I have taken many deer with my 1895SS, I hunt mostly swamps where tracking a deer would be difficult, never had to track one since I started hunting with with the Marlin. The 45-70 Govt. cartridge is also very accurate, with practice you can constantly print sub-moa groups, I myself can group three that clover leaf at 100 yds.A good deer load is the Winchester CX2 300 grain semi-jacketed hollow points, and for bear the 405 grain soft round nose bullets are effective. Good luck and enjoy having the baddest lever-action out there...

Another option is the Marlin 1895 in .450 Marlin. Even more oomph than the .45-70, if you feel you need it...

stick with the 45/70 it's been around longer than any other current production round and is a whole lot cheaper to shoot than 450 Marlin but neither are too big for whitetail

Dropped two deer today with my 1895SS, one at almost 200 yds. and the other at 100 yds. They dropped and died where they stood, actually the 200 yd. deer jumped straight up in the air , then dropped and died, both with 300 grain Winchester JHP ammo, you can't beat the 45-70 in the bush...

I have one in 444, I sent it back to Marlin and had the Micro Groove barrel replaced with a new cut rifling barrel. Much better to shoot cast bullets. They replaced barrel, forearm and Magazine tube. Total cost $70.95. Talk about customer service!!!

had my 45\70 for almost a year now, shoot everything from rats to 450lb pigs with it. the only problem is, the more I shoot it, the more I want to shoot it. My wife says I spend more time in the reloading room than I do with her. She does her reloading while I am at work. I use a 360gr molly coated lead bullet in mine. shoot 1 1/2 inch groops @ 150yds. love it , would not trade it for the world.

Thank's for all your help guys, the key is to now convince by Dad to get it for me (I'm 17 so I can't buy a gun and this is going to be an early Christmas present). My next step is to convince my Grandparents to get me a reloading set for Christmas. It's all falling into place . Oh and the idea of shooting rats with a 45/70 scares yet intrigues me.
