Take a look at the Uzi Eagle or Magnum Research (same). Very accurate, trouble free, and comfortable in your hand. My family has three(two 40's and one 45), and everyone loves them!

A Glock 22, or 21 would be good.

If you want one to fit a tight budget, get a BRICK(aka. Ruger). Right now they have a promotion where they will send you a $40 rebate when you purchase a new firearm made by them. That is, granting that you dont really care about what the pistol looks like and reliability is more of a priority than looks.Other than that, Magnum Research sounds like a good idea. You might also want to look into Rock River 1911's. For $280 it cant be beat.

I don't think Rock River 45s can be bought for that price. You may be thinking of the Rock Islands which are inferior. If I am incorrect please let me know as I want a gross of them.In a 1911,the best deal right now is for the Systema Colt 45.Can be bought for $370 including tax, fees, etc.CDNN is selling them to FFL for $300.The EAA Witness is a very well built 45 and a good design.cpermd

hehehe....my apologies. It was the "Rock Island" 1911's that I was referring to.

For the price range you are talking I would recomend the Witness .45. I think it is the best inexpensive guns out there. You can get them reasonable and they are very reliable, accurate and can be tricked out if you want. I have owned a full size .45 witness blued for 2yrs and have had no trouble with it at all. Hope this helps.
