I have a Witness .45 full size blued . I have owned it for approx 2yrs. I think it is one of the best inexpensive guns out there. Mine has never jammed and is very accurate. I would recomend it to anybody. My only regret is that it is not in the "wonder finish". Now to compare it to S&W and Ruger, my only experience is the 645 for the Smith and the P90 for the Ruger. All three were very reliable. Accuracy I will give the nod to the Witness with the Smith coming in second. If it sounds like I am bad mouthing the Ruger it is personal preference. The Ruger didn't ring my chimes. Its not a great gun but its not a bad gun either. SO in conclusion the Witness was great, The Smith OK and the Ruger Fair. Hope this helps.[This message has been edited by royc38 (edited 10-23-2001).]

Owned two witnesses a .45 blue steel and a Poly 9mm. Excellent both. As good as Ruger (which is good) and S&W. You wont be sorry.

The Witness is one of the best pistols available no matter at what price. The .45 with its 10-round capacity is near the top available in a .45 pistol, with only the pre-ban Glock and Para-Ordnance and clones having more magazine capacity. It feels great in the hand. It points naturally. Mine is reliable. Current pistols no longer are shipped with Mec-Gar magazines. The non-Mec-Gar magazines are not the quality of Mec-Gar magazines, and it is nearly impossible to load 10 rounds in a non-Mec-Gar .45 magazine. Mec-Gar accessory magazines are available from Brownells, and hold 10 rounds easily. Replace the original, non-Mec-Gar magazines first thing.Current pistols are not finished as well as earlier pistols, but I think they are just as functional. I am sorry Tanfoglio quit building them in stainless. I would buy the wonder finish over the blue. I would select the Witness in .45 over the single stack Smith and Ruger anytime. If you happen to find a pre-ban magazine that has an extended floor plate, you can get 12 or 13 round capacity. If you happen to find a 170mm magazine with an extended floor plate, you can get up to about 18 to 19 round capacity.

JudgeColt,I hope you wern't including the Kimber Polymer when you said: "The .45 with its 10-round capacity is near the top available in a .45 pistol, with only the pre-ban Glock and Para-Ordnance and clones having more magazine capacity." The Kimber Polymer has a 14 round capacity with no additional length floor plates (ie +2 bottom) and still has plenty of Pre-Ban mags left in stock! With that said, I've never owned a Witness, but hear good things about them from people who's opinions I respect ... such as JudgeColt

My prime concealed carry is the Witness .45 poly. It's reliable, accurate, lighter than most [with a 10 rd. mag.] and the price is right[I paid $289.00 out the door 8 months ago]. Granted, I carry it in a fanny pack with a spare mag. But, I don't have to worry about the finish getting scratched up. I shot the Ruger P-97 2 days ago. It's their newer slim profile .45. It's 8 rd.mag. and somewhat sloppy hardware didn't impress me too much. They do have a rebate program going on until the end of this year for $40.00 off on any "P" pistol purchase. kk: I got lazy and did not try to list every double-stack .45 there is. That is why I included the "and clones" after Para-Ordnance. I consider every double-stack pistol based on the Government Model/M1911 pattern to be a Para-Ordnance clone. My point was that 10 rounds in a .45 is near the top of the magazine capacity available in a .45, but it is not the top obviously. I find the Witness grip to be better than the other double-stack .45 pistols, but the double-stack M1911 clones are close.
