Back in 1993 I heard the Maddi was best to get.I paid $350 and have never fired it. Now I am reading how bad they are.Which is the all around best AK? I am ready to rebuy. I am offered my $ back from a friend.

Back in 1993 they were doing a better job of them than they did in the 1980's or in the late 1990's. Early on they didn't know what they were doing. Later they didn't care, they just wanted to get them to market. As for what is best now, I'd say the Bulgarians or Hungarians, but both are more expensive and harder to find than the Romanians. The Romanian SAR 1 is a bit more on the crude side, but fully up to speed on the function side of things. The key advantage to the SAR 1 compared to your Maadi is that the SAR 1 legally has the pistol grip and regular stock. I am assuming your Maadi has a thumbhole stock since you bought it in 1993 and paid $350 for it. The pre-ban ones wholesaled at over $850 in 1988. It was only after the 1989 ban that there prices came in line with the Chinese ones. They had the thumbhole stock at that time. That is why you see so few true pre-ban Maadi's, they never sold that many because they were 3 times the price of a Norinco. Any of the ones you find cheap with a pistol grip are ususally ones that people illegally put pistol grips and regular stocks on. The early post-ban ones still had a boyonet lug, but the ears had been ground off. They also still had a threaded muzzle with a small tack weld holding the cut-off slant muzzlebrake in place.Anyway you may not want to let the Maadi go before you actually try it, but its up to you. They were considered to be the closest to Russian issue since the Russians built their plant for them.

I just bought a maadi NEW for $320 + $25 transfer fee. Tight, clean gun. I have read pros and cons about the gun. It has a pistol grip, 30 rd. and 5 round mag. Soon as I get it to the range this weekend, I'll give my 2 cents. This will be my first ak to own 7.62x39.NOTE 10/26 After cleaning the gun noticed that the front sight is tweaked. The elevation / windage pin. Looks like iT was screwed in crooked. A lot of paint chipped. Gun not like the one in the picture, the stock is even different. The guy sent me a photocopy of the manula, not the one in the picture. I must say that so far I am not happy. You are probably better off going to a local store OR insist on a 5 day inspection if you buy a gun online. I had to wait 3 days to get approved to pickup the gun.[This message has been edited by taxijohn (edited 10-26-2001).]

My post ban MAADI touches bullets at 50yds. How is that for a testimonial? I would not sell mine if I were you unless another deal was waiting for me to upgrade to a milled receiver.
