Hello, I have a 7x57 Mauser in a black synthetic stock. It's a 98 action but I think it was rebarreled later to 7mm. The presentbarrel is 7mm and has a military look, but the action is stamped 7.9 something makeing it8mm. I Know it's hard to value an unseen gunBut I plan to leave the leupold base and rings.I also added a timney trigger. The finnishappears to be a teflon type black and the stockis in good condition. I don't know who made the stock, are they marked somewhere?Again any help on value would help, and thanksin advance for your help. By the way it's a good shooter!!!!

How does this caliber compare with the 270 and 7mm-08?

i think you said it. its a good shooter. there are so many variables to consider, like how nice is the metal finish? black "teflon" you say? bad sign. what sort of barrel? sporter or old military? i have a military 98 that was fitted with a new sporter barrel, a turned-down bolt handle, drilled and tapped, a replacement trigger system, new safety, synthetic stock, and reblued action. i like it but i could have bought a remington or a winchester for the $400 i spent on this. if i sold it i might get $250.
    i never make misteakes.

I can't comment on the value of the rifle, but the calibre is unbeatable in its class and so is the Mauser action on your rifle.I have a Sako Hunter in 7x57 with Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8, and it's a perfect rifle. The most elephants ever shot by one man (WDM "Karamojo" Bell) was with a 7x57 - not that one would necessarily want to shoot elephants, mind you - but it shows the versatility of the cartridge.
