Legal Shotgun length question

I have a model 870 with an 18' barrel, while I was reading the current law reguarding shotgun length at the NRA web page, it stated that the legal length should be no less than 26'. My question is, is that a measurement from the end of the reciever to the front of the barrel, or the whole length of shotgun. If I measure from the front of barrel back to the reciever I believe its 25'. If I measure to the back of the stock its well over 30'.Would appreciate any responses - Thanks

Over-all length refers to the length from the end of the barrel to the end of the stock. Think of it as total length.

The law referring to the overall length means the length of the entire shotgun. That's why substitution of a pistol grip for the shoulder stock could be a critical issue. The manufacturers are familiar with the law; it's generally best to stick to the standard configuration. That way, you don't have to worry about it.Neal

In MD, law is 18 1/2" barrel. OAL is of little concern. who decides how to measure? what if folding stock is present? how do you measure then?
