Help pistol not cycling

I have a star 9mm it is basiclly a single shot, I have checked the extractor and it pulls the brass fine, the ejector is fine however the gun will not cycle. I took the mag out and fired one shot, the slide comes back but the brass is still hanging on the extractor, I have tried increased and decreased recoil springs, the only thing left I can think of is chamber wear? Maybe enough gases are blowing by to reduce recoil and prevent slinging of the brass? The brass is blacked a little after firing. Any help? Witht eh frame off I can observe the extractor on the brass, it seems fine, the ejector works when I pull an empty cartridge by racking the slide.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Check the chamber dimensions, you might have a Star barrel actually chambered for the Spanish 9mm Largo military cartridge, rather then the more common 9mm Luger. Sometime the correct caliber is only marked on the barrel hood, and the markings are either very faint or have been removed.

The badly smoked cases are very characteristic of undersized cases fired in a longer chamber. The Largo cartridge case is approximately .150 longer then the 9mm Luger. The gas blowby when firing the shorter Luger cartridge in the longer chamber is quite substantial. It would probably cause a similar malfunction, to the one you describe.

If you shoot one round in the chamber and the slide locks, there is enough gas. I have had weapons that would cycle by hand just fine and when fired would not eject the rounds, I think you may have a bad ejector.
