Its getting harder to find Brown Bear 7.62x54 FMJ ammo at my local Gander Mnt, so I need to find another place/type of ammo to buy. I dont mind cleaning my gun every time I use it, but I dont want to use anything too dirty. What is a good commercial brand or surplus type of ammo for target shooting and plinking?

Perhaps you should try a selection from http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/7_62x54R.html

I purchased some boxes of the Yugoslavian ammo and they seem to work fine. Just keep in mind the website has about a two week shipping delay.

How much different is the Yugoslavian ammo to the Czech or Bulgarian light ball? I heard that heavy ball ammo can destroy the rifling after a while.

I doubt the heavy ball would wear the bore faster. In any case, for a medium power round like this, you're going to get at least 10,000 shots before you see any appreciable wear, and that might even be a GOOD thing if you have a bore with some pits.

What it will do is batter the shooter more... [:D]

I've put heavy ball through all my guns at one point or another, and other than a little stiffer recoil and slightly different point of impact, no difference was noted.

I'd get the light ball just because it shoots better for me in most of my guns.

If you are shooting the PSL 54 it is recommended to use the light ball. I believe this is mainly due to the lighter barrel.

The only thing the heavy ball will wear out faster is your shoulder! [;)]

Seriously, the Mosin Nagant guns cost around $100 each, and quite likely already have pitted bores. . .why are you worrying about this?

I've tried a few different milsurp types (Polish, Russian, etc), and haven't noticed that much difference between them.

Then again, I wasn't really testing for pinpoint accuracy, and I always clean the gun thoroughly anyway.

Supposedly the Czech stuff is the best out there right now (ie most accurate), though it also costs more than the other milsurp rounds.

The Russian usually costs a little bit more than the other Commie Bloc stuff, though I can't really say it its any better or not.
