I have been reading the forums for awhile but never posted. I have come across a winchester 60a that I now have. I am trying to find out about it. I has a 23'' inch round barrel. The barrell looks like stainless steel. I cannot find a serial # on rifle. My question is did they make this rifle in this configuration? Also how many modle 60a's were made and when.

If you have been reading the forums for "awhile", it probably will not shock you that I am the one providing you with an answer[;)].

OK, this is what I can tell you... the Model 60 was introduced in late 1930 (the first rifles were delivered to warehouse stock on December 30, 1930). It was announced in the January 2, 1931 price list. It was never serialized.

In its original incarnation, it was made with a 23-inch barrel. In 1933, the barrel length was increased to 27-inches. Winchester introduced Stainless Steel barrels in late 1926 as a special order option for most of the models in production at that time, but due to very poor sales, they were discontinued circa 1931. If your rifle was a barrel that is marked "STAINLESS STEEL", it would be extremely rare on a Model 60. It would also seem to point towards a manufacture date of 1931 for your rifle.

Winchester discontinued the Model 60 in 1934 (with a total production of 165,754), and reissued it as the Model 67 in the same year.

It would be really neat if you could post a few pictures of it[8D].

It will be clearly marked "STAINLESS STEEL" on the left side of the barrel near the rear sight. I also forgot to mention, that it should have a 2-digit year date code stamped on the bottom of the barrel (you will need to remove the stock to see it). If you do not find the Stainless Steel marking, my bet is that the barrel has been stripped of its original bluing and is simply in the white.
