HK SL6 Rebarreling??

Hello,

I have a very technical question about rebarreling and SL6...

I would like to install a barrel with a 1:8 twist on an SL6, for the purpose of using heavier match bullets...(I despise the slow twist on the SL6).

However, I have been told that the Sl6 has unique striations inside the chamber to allow gas to "lubricate" the extraction process.

Is it possible to rebarrel this HK with a new barrel, having a non striated match chamber????

What are the thoughts on the same question for the SL7?

Thanks

    Sling Works,

The chambers are fluted on all Heckler & Koch and CETME delayed-blowback, roller-locking firearms. The 12 longitudinal flutes extend rearward from the baffel lead to 0.25-inch from the chamber face. These flutes reduce the cartridge case's bearing surface and permit propellent gases to flow around the case acting as a lubricant to ease extraction. As delayed blowback does not offer the available power reserve of gas operation under adverse conditions and there is no primary extraction, chamber fluting is required for reliable functioning. Ejected cases are all marked with distinctive striations but, contrary to popular belief, this does not affect their potential for reloading.

The 5.56mm barrels have a twist rate of 1:10.6" while the 7.62NATO barrels are 1:11".

These barrels are not the typical threaded tenon barrels that we are familiar with for bolt action rifles. The delayed roller action design needs the fluted chamber to reduce the cartridge case grip on the chamber and actuate the system. Unless you know a barrel maker that has the expertise and the desire to make something like these, you're really out of luck.

    Best.

    ADDED:

The SL7 will stabilize the Sierra 200 gr. Match King even with the short barrel and the 1:11" twist.

The SL6 in the 5.56mm should be fine with the Sierra 69 gr. Match King but none longer than that.

There is a very nice SL7 on the Auction side that comes with a scope mount and 3-10 round magazines.

    Best.
