AR upper 'features'

I can only wade in AR waters, so I have 2 basic questions.

What is the purpose of the 'triangle shaped' part of the receiver that is behind the eject port ? My WAG is protecton from ejects, but I notice some models don't have it.

My search of posts here report that some users push their forward assist as part of their 'charging mantra'. They always do it and always will. Others of of the opinion that " If I have a failure to feed, I want to clear the rifle of that round completely, not try to push it in".
SO my question is...Are there serious drawbacks if the upper does not have a forward assist ?

As always, Thanks for your time.

Not really any problems without a forward assist.. you know the grove in the bolt carrier, thats for you to manually pull the bolt into battery if it doent go all the way forward when it is released, if you can not pull it into battery with your left index finger in the groove and your hand wrapped around the magwell it is good procedure to eject the round. In other words just pull back the charging handle until it stops and let go..

The bump ahead of FA is a brass deflector, it basically just deflects the brass forward so that the rifle is less painfull to shoot left handed.
