A friend has a S&W 10mm auto. Since 10mm cartriges are getting hard to find is there a comversion kit to 9mm or 40 cal?

As far as I know, there is NO conversion kit to swap any Smith 10mm AUTO pistol into any other caliber.
EDIT: I looked into this specifically, and apparently Bar-Sto USED to make a conversion barrel to swap the Smith 1006 into .40SW. But they stopped making this barrel several years back, and these are extremely hard to find now.
10mm rounds are plenty available (by mail order, for example), though they cost more than other rounds.
If your friend likes the 10mm round (and it is quite a good round) then I suggest the following options for him:
a. Convince his local gunstore to stock some for him. It should be pretty easy to do so long as he keeps buying it! If they don't want to stock it, I'd bet they'd still be happy to order him a case so long as he pays for it in advance.
b. Order some from any number of dealers that sell mail order ammunition on the internet, telephone, or by catalog.
c. Learn to reload his own ammo. (Probably the most cost-effective technique, if he shoots in quantity).
d. If ammo cost is an issue, he can swap his 10mm Smith and Wesson auto for a 10mm EAA Witness semi-automatic pistol. *THAT* gun has easy to drop-in conversions to 9mm, 40SW, .45ACP, and .38 Super, available at a fairly reasonable cost of about $230 each.

Call Smith or Bar-sto and ask if any of their 40S&W barrels will fit. A 40S&W barrel should be all you need, just like you can buy a 40S&W, 357Sig and 9x25 barrels for a Glock 20 10mm and use the factory Glock 10mm magazines. I do it all the time with my Glock 10mm.

I seem to recall that the Smith 10MM autos will feed, chamber, fire and cycle the .40 S&W, using 10MM mags ???

Yea, some guys do it. The extractor holds the shorter 40S&W in place in the longer 10mm chamber, but I wouldn't trust it. Getting a 40S&W barrel is the way to go.
