I had a remington 12 guage barrel given to me a while ago. It is a vent. rib barrel and I am not sure if it is for a rem. pump 870 or a rem. 1187. Is the end that fits into receiver different for the two guns a mentioned so I can identify it that way or could you tell me what each look like?[?]

Look where the barrel slides over the mag tube. if it is a gas operated gun, there will be gas escape holes drilled in it that lead up into the barrel. You might also be able to see them simply by looking down the bore.

It could be a variety of guns such as the 1100, Sportsman 58, or 11-87 if its a gas operated gun.

The 1100 /1187 barrels have a long tang...about 3 to 3-1/2" in length..The 870 has a short little tang..about 1/2 to 3/4"... The gas ring on the semi- auto barrel is more than 1-1/2" long and the 870 is really short...1/4 to 3/8"...
    Hope this helps,

Top is for the 870, and it's the same as the 58 except for the gas holes.
    Bottom is for the 1100..........
