Shipping Handgun

I read a lot of the old posts about shipping handguns but I think I need further clarification.

I am not a licensed dealer. I want to ship a gun to SIG for repair. I do have a FedEx account. So I thought I would fill in the description part of the shipping label as "tools and dies" and drop it in the FedEx box for pickup. Is that ok or should I go to their office and declare that it's a pistol?

I asked Sig and they didn't give me any suggestions other than to send it by overnight.

Thanks.

Hello all I am new to the forums so excuse me if I am asking a repeat question here I did do a few searches and think I know the answer but just need a little reassurance from the experts so I dont upset anyone in the auction side. So here is my confusion shipping a hand gun I do not have an FFL and when I have sold riffles I just have the buyer send me a copy of their FFL then I ship it via the Post Office but as I understand it the Post Office does not allow you to ship handguns, but it looks like Fedex and UPS does but I am unclear on the FFL part can I still just have the buyer send me a copy of their FFL then ship it Fedex/Ups as I do with the riffles and the Post office?
Again I apologize if this is a repeat and redundant question I just want to be sure before I post any hand guns in the auction side.
    Thanks in advance.

How do you ship. I am a individual. I now it has to go overnight but does have to be shipped from one FFL to another or can it be shipped from individual to FFL. The reason I am asking is I am selling my Python Hunter to finance another gun. Thanks in advance.

We'd rather repeat ourselves than risk having you do something that could land you in a federal prison. And, that does happen to folks who don't follow federal firearms laws.

Yes, you can ship a handgun to a licensee in any state. You must use either UPS Next Day Air (or Next Day Airsaver), or Fedex Priority Overnight. You must ship from a carrier's customer counter, not a packing/shipping store. You must declare the contents of your package. You must request an adult signature.

You do not need a paper copy of the recipient's FFL; you just need to know that he is a licensee. You can simply request his license number. You must verify his name & address using ATF's FFL EZ-Check, on their website.

Just to be a little redundant here, you must ship to an FFL, you cannot ship to an unlicensed buyer. The cost to you to ship a handgun by UPS or FedWx is going to be somewhere over $70, I think the last one I sent to a smith was about $80. It may be cheaper to have a local FFL transfer and ship the gun for you, at least it is worth asking. They will often do it for less than the $80 because they can ship via USPS.

You are correct it has been asked but never a bad idea to make sure . Some of the confusion comes about because some FFL dealers will not take an Item unless it comes from another FFL or the person is standing in front of them. Some will take an item if the seller seen a photo copy of their drivers lic. This is because the receiving FFL dealer has to enter the item in his BOOKS. If I were selling I would make it clear in the ad That The BUYER has to arrange with HIS FFL dealer to accept item directly from you or he will have to pay you extra to find and arrange for shipment from a FFL on your end. One side note the USPS will ship only from one FFL to another FFL when it comes to hand-guns s and the cost is much lower then you shipping through FEDEX or UPS because theses to carriers insist on overnight air shipping.Cheers Karl
