"New" Win MD 70 - SC Plant

I remember an article several months ago intended to relieve MD 70 admirers that a high quality MD 70 would be offered again from a new South Carolina plant. I believe this was to be a FN-owned plant. Is this plant producing 70s? Are they high quality (such as controlled feed, cut checkering, etc.)? Are they affordable? Are they selling? Is the MD 70 now "dead" (other than the old ones)?

They are in production and I have seen one or two. They are expensive. I can not answer your other questions.

Go over to the auction side and do a search. I think they are starting out at around 700.00. I have not seen one but from what I have heard they are very, very nice.

I have held two, the fit wood to metal was not as good as I had hoped. About on par with with a Remington CDL.

FN Manufacturing is now producing Model 70s. Using all new cnc equip. with some of the old Model 70 tooling from the New Haven plant. I believe for 2008 there were 5 models available. Controlled round feed, cut checkering, metal work better than New Haven. Featherweight started at $999.99 rest up from there. A couple of things that have the purists talking. New MOA trigger system. Adjustable from 3-5 lbs. And a Pachmayer decelerator pad built into each Model 70. IMHO these new 70s are much better than some of the stuff that came out of New Haven in the past decade or so. The trigger seems really nice to me, wider trigger surface very smooth, very crisp. As nice as my 1950s Model 70s triggers? No. But still better than alot of more expensive stuff out there. Seemed like very nice quality as per FN.

I have seen a few of them. They do appear to be a better choice than the LATER New Haven produced ones, as far as fit and finnish goes. That is not to say that the ones from New Haven can't be taken care of with some TLC. The ones from SC, are decent, but not compared to the pre-64. They are definately overpriced for all the jobs they eliminated, that the company said was the reason they cost so much to build is labor. The replaced quite a bit of hands with CNC machines, and the price is more than ever.
